Texas Bluebonnet Horse & Dog Portraits

Texas Bluebonnet Horse & Dog Portraits

Getting bluebonnet pictures were really important to me this year. Even though I’ve admired the amazing wildflowers in Texas for seven years now, I’ve never actually taken any kind of bluebonnet pictures. Maybe that’s because of this hilarious tumblr that makes fun of people squatting in the bluebonnets for pictures, but mostly I’ve just been lazy.

Originally, the plan was to meet my roommate at a little patch of bluebonnets by our house and take some photos of the dogs. The day we scheduled that was dark & dreary, and then Heather mentioned there was a huge bluebonnet patch in the field behind our barn and that she was available to take portraits. Dogs + horses = sold! So I met her last Friday afternoon with the fur babies in tow for some photography fun time.

I won’t type a ton today, because it’s all about the pictures. And it should be, because they’re gorgeous.

I love my photographic old spaniel, and glad I got these in the later years of his life. Eliot will be twelve this fall, and we never know how long we get the things we love in life.

As for me, I was feeling fat and blah about myself when I headed to work the morning of the photoshoot. I told Heather my priority picture wise were the dogs, and anything with me was a bonus.

In truth I don’t love how I look in a lot of these photos, but what I do love is seeing me interact with my favorite creatures.

We’re a little family – Simon the dogs and I. We have lumps and bumps and scars, but we love each other.

These pictures show that, and that’s why they’re special.

That’s why I’m glad I had them taken.

If you wait to get portraits taken until you feel like a super model, whether it’s you and your spouse or you and your favorite dog, you’ll wait forever. Nobody ever loves everything about themselves.

In the past I’ve not gotten photos taken because I was waiting to be thinner, but I’m done with that.

  1. Those photos are just fantastic! We don’t have any cool wildflowers, but it definitely makes me want to get a family portrait taken with all my pets. Except the bird, he can’t come.

  2. Love these–so pretty! I totally agree with what you’re saying about not waiting for the “perfect” time to do something, especially photos — you look great!

  3. I love everything about this post, and I think you look beautiful. I can see the love you all have for each other, and the gorgeous setting is just a bonus.
With Rio a little under the weather, I was just thinking I may have missed my chance for a photo session with him. Everything here is still brown and dead looking, so I don’t want to do them now. But if he turns around and is feeling better in a few weeks when things green up, I think I will try and and get someone out to take some photos.

  4. Gorgeous photos. You look absolutely beautiful, peace filled, really…and you shared very wise advice, always take the pictures! How often do we look back on old pics as we age or change physique and think “dang I looked good back then!!”?

I’m a huge pro photo junkie, drives my husband nuts (because expensive!) but they’re so worth it. I just did a boudoir maternity shoot and wasn’t feeling super sexy 37 weeks pregs but omg I love the pics and capturing this moment in time with baby & body.

I still say Eliot steals the show with his poses and ample free spirit 😉

  5. These are lovely! Just the other week I finally bit the bullet and booked a pro photo session with Pearl when the lupines should bloom at the farm, because it’s my favorite scene in the world and I have no idea where we’ll be next summer. With some upcoming unexpected vet bills I was starting to think maybe I should cancel, but after reading your post and seeing your pictures I’m going to keep the appointment. You are right, you never know how long you have. Awesome job, Heather!

  6. It’s funny that you feel a little self-conscious in these photos because when I first saw them on Facebook my initial reaction was how amazing you look! I love that shirt and your makeup is on point 😀 Of course the furbabies look fabulous <3

  7. Thank you! You are so right and wise and seeing how beautiful you look gives me courage to follow your lead!

  8. These are beautiful. I really needed this little piece of home. Your post made me feel a little closer to Texas, today. Thank you for sharing, and you and your fuzzy friends all look great!

  9. These are gorgeous pictures, you look great! I love all your furbabies. If I lived in Texas I would be taking ALL THE PICTURES in the bluebonnets. I think they are fantastic, lol. I will always regret not getting pictures with my old gelding, I kept putting it off until it was no longer possible, so yes, always get the pictures!

  10. Wow. These are lovely. I pondered taking pictures with my horses during our California Poppy super bloom but it caused hours of standstill traffic on the freeway and that soured me to the idea. Lol
I definitely need to hit up more than just Dallas during my annual trip to Texas.

  11. I tried commenting on this earlier in the week but my phone failed. As I scrolled down, one image at a time, I kept thinking, “that’s my favorite–wait, THAT’s my favorite!” and so on and so on. They are all stunning and I can’t pick a favorite because each is so special. Simon looks so regal–except for his silly face–and your dogs are precious. You look great and very happy! I loved seeing these. 🙂

  12. These turned out beautifully and 100% capture Texas in the springtime. You also look happy and relaxed, which is my favourite part of these pictures
